Pre-Conference Sessions - 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

VDX - Limit 12

Chinook Arch Staff

In this session trainer(s) from Chinook Arch will walk you through the basics of using VDX. Processes outlined will include: navigation of the work queue, the steps involved in the life cycle of a request, and what to do when you run into trouble. This practical session is aimed at library staff who use and want to improve, or who are new to VDX. Bring your questions and we can work through them together. By the end of the session attendees should have more confidence using this tool and know what to do when they are stuck.

Book Repair - Limit 10

Something old, something new! How do you treat your books within your collection? This session will show you how NLLS breaks in new books, offer suggestions for preventative measures, as well as give you hands on training. Come prepared with items from your collection that need some TLC and we will guide you through the process of book repair.

Genealogy - Limit 12

You and your patrons are looking for answers...They want to know where to go to find their family history and how to do it. We will be working on-line to explore changes in strategies, and learn to decipher the hidden clues in all of us.

Board Basics 1 - Limit 30

The popular Board Basics Workshop is available this year at the NLLS Conference! This workshop is open to all library trustees, library managers and library system staff, and is designed to improve participants' knowledge of the Libraries Act, Libraries Regulations, and other important legislation. In particular, participants will understand: The Alberta Library Network in context; Library Board roles, responsibilities and relationships; Other important issues such as finances and board member effectiveness. Come prepared to ask lots of questions, become informed, meet colleagues from across the system, and have FUN! It is fundamental to take Board Basics 2 if you are considering taking Board Basics 1.

A1. EBSCO Products for Novice Researchers

Content has always been key with EBSCO products, and patrons are looking for the simplest route to obtain the valuable information. In this session we will review basic ways to show your patrons basic methods of extrapolating interesting information from these databases.

A2. ME Libraries: The Realization of Alberta Wide Borrowing

This province-wide initiative will allow library clients to access all Alberta public libraries as if they were in their home library. This change in practice is exciting yet nerve-wracking. In this session we will discuss the implications of this exciting new development, both from a province-wide and on-the-ground perspective.

A3. Board Basics 2 - Limit 30

A continuation of Board Basics 1 from Pre-Conference this workshop is open to all library trustees, library managers and library system staff. In this session, we will continue our discussion from the Pre-Conference session. It is fundamental to take Board Basics 1 if you are considering taking Board Basics 2.

Library children's programs are appreciated by the community. They are useful in teaching parents and children alike. This will be a practical session using techniques that have been successful in our programs. Come prepared to laugh, participate, sing and have fun!

B1. Creating Autism Spectrum Friendly Environments

This session will delve into practical ideas and strategies for creating environments which minimize stress and improve engagement for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Participants will learn how organization of space, visual support and distraction free environments can encourage and support the use of community facilities by those with ASD.

B2. Public Library Service for the Kainai Nation - A Model for Alberta

First Nations in Alberta have, historically, fallen through the cracks when it comes to public library services. But when a group of dedicated educators harnessed the power of partnerships, something very powerful emerged. This session will cover the steps we took to implement the only public library on Federal Land in Alberta, and look at the impact that the library is having on the community.

B3. Tips & Tricks with Polaris - Limit 20

If you are simply using Polaris to check in/out, attend this session to learn more about Circulation, the Find Tool, Reports and Notices and so much more! You will learn some time saving tips and tricks to hopefully streamline your workflow. Come armed with your questions and be prepared to take home some treasures that you can quickly implement to make your library the best that it can be for your patrons.

B4. Productive Workplaces

Dimitri Pojidaeff (CHRP), HR Group Management

An overview of what management practices foster and maintain a productive workplace. How to avoid "Flavors of the Month", and how to implement those practices which add value, motivate, and retain staff at all levels.

B5. The Purse Lady with the Accent presents "The Magic of Scarves"

Join her in a hands-on scarf tying workshop. Learn step-by-step, while she teaches you how to create looks that will compliment your style. Learn ways to incorporate this into your programming.

C3. Create-A-Community

Imagine, create & play with Make-do fasteners. This hands-on, interactive session will demonstrate how these clever tools work; share ideas and creations, then let the building begin! An easy and inexpensive option for libary programming, with the additional benefit of reusing recycled items.

D2. Comics In Your Library

A library is often thought of as a resource, but in the current day of easy and immediate access, libraries need to look at their facilities in new ways, such as a retail store. How are you attracting customers? Which customers aren't visiting your store? How do you make your books pop and grab interest? And how can the rising boom in pop culture, particularly from comics, help you make your library a bustling place people want to be? Jay will discuss demographics, retail concepts, displays and event ideas, along with a basic introduction to comics and how you can use them to help put some pop (culture) into your library!

D3. Cyber Bullying - Prevention and Mitigation

This session is designed to alert the participants to the occurrences of cyber bullying as it is quickly escalating. This escalation is primarily due to the technological advances that are available to school aged children. The anonymity of the writer is often another factor for the increase in cyber bullying.

D4. Emergency Preparedness for Libraries

Recent natural disasters in Alberta have disrupted the operations of a number of libraries, including the total loss of library facilities. Grant Tolley will present the rationale for the creation of an emergency preparedness and business continuity plan for libraries, and will provide a checklist and framework for the task.

Learn how to access these resources, navigate their interfaces, and download and read content. Feel free to bring your laptops, tablets, phones or other gadgets to follow along!

E4. "I Never Lied" Presentation

Shelly Ann shares her own personal journey to survive the adverse effects of the extreme abuse that she suffered as a child. By telling her story of survival she hopes to help other victims to understand that we are creatures of response and the behavioral patterns we develop are just that, responses, and we all respond the same way.

Come explore the vast world of Minecraft with us! We will be giving a session to cover the basics and some of the more advanced mechanics of the game. Join us for an afternoon of pixelated adventure! This is a great tool for programming.

F2. Silly Solutions Revisited

Super silly Miss Lilly is burstin' with silly (and not-so-silly) ideas to help you and your library break away from boring! Evolve into a place of panache your patrons will seek out as they join the reading revolutions occurring in our school and public libraries today. Share some laughs, fun ideas, and interesting ways to bring about the rapid revolution of materials as we put books in the hands of our youth!

F3. Insurance 101

F4. Library Statistics: Not Just a Hoop to Jump Through

Public library boards are required by the Province to collect and report statistics and other performance measures. What are the easiest ways you can do this necessary work, and what are the most effective ways you can use the results in your library and your community? Kerry will provide insights and ideas on how statistics can strengthen your planning and advocacy efforts, and how they can be not just a bureaucratic hoop to jump through, but a bridge to effectiveness and community engagement.
